Home is in Oakland, California, with my family.
Currently I’m at Figma as a UX writer. In the past I’ve held roles at Harper’s Magazine, Lapham’s Quarterly, Studio Mercury, and Grammarly.
I’ve also done work for Apple, Morisawa Inc., NY Times, Callaway, Criterion Collection, n+1, and Adobe.
Others, too. I have a LinkedIn with more stuff.
A very few pieces I’ve written in the last decade or so:
“Hell Breaks Loose,” on searching for happiness while reading about hell. “Midwinter Hotel,” a collage essay as an act of living through history. “Motet for the Record,” an homage to Lewis Lapham in his own words. Those are at LQ.
“Source Code,” on how William Shockley’s eugenics reverberate through Silicon Valley. “Leading Questions,” a found poem about the fall of 2016 using op-ed headlines. Those are at n+1.
In the further past was Tiger Dare, with Wires Over, Wired In. I was also in a latter-day NYC-based iteration of the Moles. We recorded some songs for Code Word.
I started a little co-op record label called Homing Instinct Records to put out my record and others by Bay Area artists.
You can find me at henry.freedland (at) gmail.com or on Bluesky/Instagram at @hernyfreebland.
I’m a writer, editor, and musician.
I also write, less often than I’d like, at my newsletter/blog called eephus.
